East Malvern's fling

East Malvern Combined Club members kicked up their heels to Scottish country dancing at a recent meeting, with a demonstration of a range of types of Scottish country dances.
In lieu of sitting down and listening to a speaker (but still in keeping with the Probus theme of fellowship, friendship and fun), members of the East Malvern Combined Club kicked up their heels to Scottish Country dancing at a recent meeting. A team of dancers from St John’s Scottish Country Dance Group gave a demonstration of a range of different types of Scottish Country dances after marching into the hall to the bagpipes.
Some of the history of Scottish country dancing was explained, including some 'dos and dont’s' of formal etiquette on the dance floor (a gentleman is not permitted to talk to a lady unless they have been properly introduced). We heard that many of the dances go back several hundred years, with new dances still being written.
Then it was time for members to join in, and the hall was soon filled with those eager to give it a go. With a little help from the demonstration team, everyone was soon in full swing and enjoying several Ceilidh dances. Any lack of expertise was made up for with enthusiasm.
Members were encouraged to wear something Scottish, resulting in a range of dress, including skirts, sashes and funny hats, and prizes were awarded to the best dressed lady and man. Prizes were also given to the best dancers.
All in all, the day was a huge success, as it was different, interesting and great fun.
