Find a perfect match

Nationwide pet charity PetRescue has launched a new pet adoption program that aims to help seniors find love and companionship while finding homes for shy rescue cats. The “Shy Cats and Senior Citizens campaign” offers older Australians the opportunity to adopt a new furry friend for the reduced price of $25, which includes desexing, vaccinations and microchipping.

PetRescue will also offer to rehome your new friend if looking after them ever becomes a problem, allowing seniors to rest easy about their future.

PetRescue co-founder John Bishop says that the shy cats need a special type of home. These are pets that are not that good with young, loud families, so seniors make a perfect fit.

“Senior citizens are wonderfully placed to be able to offer shy cats the time, patience and love that they need to blossom, offering both the new owner and the rescue cat a chance to enjoy each other’s company and a quieter environment,” he said.

“And the special love of a shy cat is such an incredible addition to a seniors’ life – there’s the proven mental health benefits of pet ownership, and the satisfaction that comes from adopting an animal that has an uncertain future and is in desperate need of a second chance at a happy life.”

Or find puppy love

If dogs are more your speed, guide dog associations across Australia encourage seniors to lend a hand. Helping raise a guide dog pup is  a great way to contribute to society, get some companionship but not have the responsibility of life-long dog ownership.
