Coach trip to learn about Canterbury's 'Central Plains Water Scheme

On a glorious winter day, our Malvern Probus Group (Combined) recently had a very interesting coach trip to learn about Canterbury's 'Central Plains Water Scheme'.

It is enabling much increased productivity in traditionally dry farming areas through a cooperative and innovative irrigation scheme. We saw some beautiful scenery as we drove around different components of the scheme, including this view of Mt Hutt, across the Rakaia River Valley.

After lunch at one of Methven's well-known Hotels, members spent an hour or so in the interactive New Zealand Alpine and Agriculture Encounter Centre, where, amongst the educational activities there, people were able to peer into an active model of the digestive system of a cow, get up close and personal with a heavy machinery simulator, and refresh their memories of old footage of early skiing adventures in New Zealand's High Country.
