Book of the month: My Time Has Come
26 Sep 2017
Plot overview
The unexpected result of a small town love affair, Thomas is very nearly adopted out by his young, confused mother. However, after choosing to keep him, Thomas’ mother finds she must sacrifice time with her child in order to provide for him.
With a father who has no interest in his son and a mother who is often vacant - either working to provide for her son or drinking and moving around from one man to the next - Thomas grows up with a deep distrust of human relationships.
Thomas’ only joy is found in achieving his goals. He manages to join the army and complete a tour of Vietnam.
Following the breakdown of his first marriage, Tom is left to be the single father of his two sons. After a spontaneous decision to attend a single parents social gathering, Tom meets Heather.
Molly Rose’s book covers the rest of Tom’s life, as Tom and Heather’s relationship faces a rocky path paved with Tom’s emotional struggles and his debilitating battle with the effects of cancer.
Review
This story is a tragic tale of the consequences of abuse, abandonment and war. Molly Rose’s novel runs raw with emotion.
Written about the life of her late husband, Molly Rose provides a sensitive but compelling insight into a man and a relationship that, like all good things, leaves more questions than it does answers.
This true story will bring you to tears and force you to look outwards as you consider what has gone on in the lives of those around you.
In addition to providing a glimpse into the devastating pain caused by broken relationships, My time has come also manages to portray an extraordinarily Australian experience of life.
