Kapiti Island Trip

On Tuesday 6 March on a calm, overcast but warm morning, after having their bags and clothing searched for rodents other other pests, 24 of members from the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast left Paraparaumu Beach on the ferry MV Te Aihe operated by the Kapiti Island Nature Tours and motored over to Kapiti Island.

Members arrived at the North End, walked 400m to a shelter and listened to an introductory talk from guide Janine who was very interesting. They heard about the island's animals, plants and human history then the island was theirs to explore via walking tracks suited to a range of fitness levels.

Members took their own lunch and the Kaka certainly weren't shy when the sandwiches appeared.

Members assembled back at the boat departure, some of the group had walked the Okupe Valley Loop Track, 1hr 30 min, a gentle gradient to an outlook above the western cliffs; some had enjoyed the Beach Landing Shelter Track and some just sat enjoying the bird song, but all looked happy.

The highlight of this trip for one member was the return voyage when the skipper dropped the motors and circled around so everyone was  able to enjoy a school of dolphins who entertained and delighted everyone with their friendly play.......a great day out.
