CRONULLA PROBUS CLUB GO WHITEWATER RAFTING

Members of Cronulla Probus have proven you are never too old to have adventures. A group of the members, aged 64 to 84, recently ventured out to Penrith’s Olympic Whitewater Stadium to take on everything that the wild water could throw at them, all successfully emerging in one piece.

President and Adventure Activities leader Gary Daniels said after the experience “whitewater rafting is rougher than it looks, it’s not for everyone. But out oldest participant Dr Bill Cumming (84) loved it – although at one stage I had to grab him by his swimmers before he disappeared overboard!”

Gary added “being retired does not just mean armchairs and slippers; today’s new retirees want the Probus Active Retirees experience, to challenge themselves both physically and mentally. Cronulla Probus offers the opportunity to do exactly that in a managed risk environment in the company of like-minded individuals. Our guys enjoyed the rafting – going back around for extra circuits; we will definitely be organising another expedition to Penrith! We are hoping some of our lady partners will join us next time, but they are all very sensible so we will have to see!”

The Penrith Olympic stadium offers individual kayaking and group rafting experiences with regulated water flows. Bookings are essential.

Cronulla Probus’ regular adventure activities also include kayaking and bushwalking, with go-karting (self-insured) scheduled for later in 2016. Other Club activities include tours, monthly guided historical walks, dinners, day trips, bowls and golf. Cycling and creative and technology skills activities are also on the agenda for introduction.

Past President John Picken added: “we are all about fun, friendship and fellowship, and while we are a men’s club our partners are key participants in all our social activities”.

Cronulla Probus meets at Cronulla Golf Club, Elouera Road Cronulla, on the third Monday of each month at 10.00 a.m. with a guest speaker from 11.00 a.m. Contact Gary Daniels 9541 0735 or visit the club’s website (search for ‘Cronulla Probus’).
