Highton Mens and the Geelong Cats Connection
02 Feb 2016
Treasurer of Highton Mens Probus Club, Don Lowe, recently completed 59 years continuous service with the Geelong AFL Football Club. Don commenced his duties in 1956 directing cars in the car park and eventually carrying out all of the ground staff duties such as crowd control, grandstand attendant , turnstyle operator, ticket collector, gate supervisor and grounds manager.
59 years is a remarkable period of service and during those years, Geelong's home ground, Kardinia Park has morphed from a provincial footy
ground to a world class stadium.
Don is modestly proud of the small part that he played in this evolution as a part time ground staff member of the Geelong Football Club.
The remaining part of the connection is that members Ron Smith and Bruce Peake both played for Geelong in the late 1950s and early
1960s. Both Ron and Bruce agree that they were very fit players but would have no hope in matching it with the current crop
of full time professional AFL players.
