Probus Club of Kapiti Coast visit Foxton
17 Sep 2024
A group of members from the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast recently travelled to Foxton.
Their first visit was to the Foxton Library and Museum, which had a very interesting display of both Dutch and Māori history. The Māori part of the Museum contained exhibits of the history of local tribes and featured canoes and a room with many carvings, both complete and in process.
The group had an enjoyable time browsing the tempting range of Dutch food and products available at The Mill. Many purchases of biscuits, cakes and stroopwafels were made! The Mill is a replica of a 17th century flour mill and stone-ground flour is available for purchase.
Their final visit was to the Flax Stripper Museum. What a fantastic, interesting and slightly scary place it is. The flax stripper is a huge, rusty looking machine with many moving parts and this museum holds one of the last machines in the world. Flax (harakeke) was widely used by both Māori and Europeans, and the flax industry became very large in New Zealand, but the increasing costs of labour caused the industry to die out.
Some stopped by the Turks factory shop to buy a few more goodies to take home. It was such a great trip, and the Club gives its thanks to Richard for organising the day.
