Currimundi in 2015
20 Mar 2015
The first meeting of 2015 for the Currimundi Combined Probus Club was well attended with 113 members and guests.
The guest speaker, Major Arthur Dugdale, spoke about the search for the hospital ship Centaur, torpedoed by the Japanese off Caloundra in 1942, with the loss of 268 lives. There were just 65 survivors. In 2008 the Queensland Government and Commonwealth Government each allocated $2 million dollars to fund the search which began in early December 2009. The ship was located on 18 December 2000, metres below sea level.
A memorial plaque was laid on the foredeck of the Centaur on 12 January 2010. Following the discovery a national memorial service was held at St John's Cathedral on the 2nd May.
