Bowen Probus Club share a photo with the big mango
21 Jul 2015
In the February-March edition of Active Retirees there was a write-up of BIG Aussie things to visit. Imagine our surprise when The Big Mango was in it. I couldn’t let that pass without some comment about our Probus Club in Bowen.
Our Probus Club was formed on 16 September, 1981. It is one of the oldest clubs in Queensland. We belong to Rotary District 9550. When it first started it was a “mens only” club. They eventually saw the ‘error of their ways’ and asked the women to join in. I understand it was decided to form a Ladies Probus Club at first but with no takers the idea was shelved. In 1988 the men again decided, that because numbers were dropping, they did need the ladies so they asked them to form a mixed club. We have been like that ever since.
We have a membership, at the present time, of 90. We have been very lucky and have always been able to maintain our membership. In the winter months our meeting numbers swell because of the influx of “Mexicans” from either across the borders or across “The Ditch.” Our club visits nearby clubs but in doing that we have to travel fair distances. Our closest club is the Whitsunday Probus Club and they are about an hour away. The next closest is Townsville which is 2 hours away. I believe we are an active club with members participating in varied activities for the sole purpose of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship.
I hope to include a photo of our club taken with the Big Mango. This photo was taken on St.Patrick’s Day where we met at one of the local pubs for lunch. (Hence the reason most people are wearing green!!!)
