In August 1993 the Rotary Club of Ashburton, responding to expressions of interest from various quarters within the local community, decided to sponsor the formation of a club to be known as the Probus Club of Ashburton.  The Rotary Club placed advertisements and circulated a letter of intent, inviting interested persons to attend a meeting in the Copland Room at the Ashburton Library at 10:00am on Wednesday September 29, 1993.  The Rotarians were of the opinion that it would be necessary to have at least 25 persons express interest for the project to become viable.

Ashburton took the final steps to becoming a formal Probus organisation on the morning of November 10, 1993.  With 56 prospective members in attendance the meeting was opened by Richard Yeoman, President of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, who presented the club with its Certificate of Accreditation, invested Warren Shardlow with his badge of office, and made a gift of a gavel to enable Warren to keep appropriate control over the meetings should any such authority become necessary.  Name badges were issued to all Foundation Members.

Since 1993 the Club has grown and thrived, with a current membership of approximately 100, including several foundation members.
