More than a quarter of the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club members—35 in total—travelled west to South Australia for a memorable journey, once again expertly organised by Belinda from Group Link Travel.
The adventure began with an overnight stay in Adelaide on the Glenelg waterfront. The group enjoyed a varied first day, including a tour of the iconic Adelaide Oval and a cruise along the Port Adelaide River. The following day allowed time to explore Glenelg, with 18 members enjoying a ride on the Ferris Wheel, taking in sweeping views of the coastline, before continuing on to Mannum.
The highlight of the trip was boarding the Murray Princess for a four-night cruise along the mighty Murray River. Arriving in Mannum in the afternoon, the group was greeted by the majestic paddle wheeler. After settling into their cabins, members explored the vessel and its many facilities.
The cruise journeyed upstream as far as Blanchetown, passing through Lock One, where the group spent the second night. Activities along the way included a visit to Burke Salter Winery for tasting, a sheep shearing and whip-cracking demonstration, a BBQ under the stars, and a visit to the Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Conservation Park.
One of the unexpected highlights of the trip came during an afternoon tender boat excursion. Members donned life jackets and boarded the ship’s tender in groups of 11 for a cruise alongside the Murray Princess. What began as a gentle river ride turned into great excitement as the boat driver playfully crossed the vessel’s wake, soaking passengers and filling the air with laughter. On return, many headed straight to the top deck to dry off in the sun, “like shags on rocks.”
After the cruise, the group visited Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop for a cooking and gin tasting experience before returning to Adelaide. The final day featured a visit to Penfolds for the Ultimate Penfolds Experience, where guide Josh provided insight into the winery’s rich history. This was followed by a tasting of six premium wines, including the renowned Grange Hermitage, often regarded as the pinnacle of Australian winemaking. The journey concluded with a lunch at Mount Lofty Ranges Winery before the return flight home.
Sincere thanks were extended to Belinda for her excellent organisation, and to all fellow travellers for their warm company and shared sense of adventure throughout the trip.
