Where the wild things are

The PAWA Zoo Picnic held the Perth Zoo was a resounding success. The picnic attracted 140 Probians, with representative clubs from Fremantle in the west, Eaton in the south, Ellenbrook in the east and Whitfords in the north.

Upon entry, Probians were supplied with a yellow bag filled with water, chips, nuts and Lifesavers as a nice treat. A door prize ticket was also in the bag, with 10 lucky door prizes drawn during the day.

The zoo had prepared a special area in the grounds under a large shady tree with chairs for us to enjoy. The President of PAWA, Elizabeth Hardy, addressed the group, then  Barbara Thomasson, a Thornlie Probus Club member, who is also a zoo docent, gave us an informative talk on the zoo. She also drove a car around the zoo to help our older members enjoy a leisurely tour instead of walk.

We sincerely thank her and her husband Greg for their assistance throughout the day.

We wandered through the grounds, and enjoyed seeing the animals such as the reptiles and birds in lovely surroundings. The meerkats were a delight to watch, as was the crocodile enjoying the sun in his pool. Two dingos were being walked with their docents and we were amused when one decided he had had enough, and was carried by the docent, just like a child!
During the day Probians could be seen returning from visiting the different areas, with wide smiles and stories to tell.

Special mention must be made of the Eaton Probians who travelled up by bus. Twenty members of their club came and we were delighted with their support.

Congratulations to Jenny McCaughan and Trish Floyd on organising this day of fun, fellowship and friendship. All in all, it was a great day.
