Twelve members travelled to Wairarapa
04 Feb 2020
Twelve members from Probus Club of Kapiti Coast made the trip to the Wairarapa to the garden of Jacky Pearson just outside Carterton.
Although it seems a bit of a slog over the Rimutaka Hill Road, it proved well worth it and all had a lovely day out on a sunny Spring day. Jacky's garden was 'a work in progress' as she and her husband have only had the property for 4 years, and the paddocks were covered in gorse when they moved into the 1889 farm house. It is being planted according to permaculture/organic principles, with many natives, a 'rain forest', vegetable garden, citrus orchard, goat pen, chook run, water course and island/lake in various stages of development. Of interest was their solar panel and wind turbine generation of electricity.
A bonus was visiting Jacky's studio where we started and ended the tour. She is an internationally recognised watercolour painter who regularly teaches workshops in many overseas countries. Many of her works were on view in the gallery.
We all had a good lunch at the Clareville Bakery and many of us splurged on new plants at the Clareville Nursery afterwards. Some went shopping in Greytown on the way home - altogether a great day out.
