Twentieth anniversary celebrations

A twentieth anniversary celebration of the formation of the Probus Club of Albany Creek on 2 July 1998 was held at the Tavernetta Function Centre at Carseldine in Brisbane.

President John Gray welcomed all to the celebration and made special mention of Brian Gilmore, President of PAQ, the Honourable Peter Dutton MP, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection and Past Presidents who no longer belong to the Club, Meg White and Chris Cleary.  Unfortunately Trevor Dawes, Patron of the Club and President of Albany Creek Rotary Club which sponsored the Club’s formation, was unable to attend the function.

An apology was recorded for Ray Hodge, Past President of Albany Creek Rotary Club and a person who was involved with the Club’s formation.  Unfortunately Ray’s health did not permit him to attend but his part is outlined in a booklet which records the history of the Club, a copy of which was made available to all who attended.

The following addressed the gathering:

  • Brian Gilmore, President of PAQ, who congratulated the Club and mentioned how good it was to read the Club’s history and learn of its good standing and effectiveness.
  • The Honourable Peter Dutton MP who also congratulated the Club on its twenty years of operation, that it was good to note that sixteen founding members were still members and that the Club was providing a worthwhile outlet for its members.
  • Don McDermott, Outings Co-ordinator, founding member and life member, who moved a vote of thanks for the guest speakers.  In so doing he indicated that he and his wife Clare were pleased to have joined the Club and that they had enjoyed their twenty years of membership.

Foundation Member Certificates had been prepared  and they together with Foundation Member Pins were presented by President John to the following:

Rita Davis, Ron Day who took Lillian’s because she was an apology, Eileen Feltham, Bill and Val Maxwell, Don and Clare McDermott, Phillip and Muriel Morcom, Alex Pentecost, who took Joan’s because she was an apology, and Allen and Joyce Spilsbury.  (Foundation member Harold Debnam was an apology on the day due to the passing of his wife Irene a few days prior to the function.  Their certificates and pins, together with a history book, have been delivered to Harold).

Life Member Certificates had been prepared and they together with Life Member Pins were presented by President John to the following:  Don McDermott, Phillip Morcom and Jim Gleisner.

The celebration concluded and guests and members then enjoyed an excellent finger food lunch.  A special cake was cut by foundation member Clare McDermott (pictured below) and enjoyed by all who were present.

The Club in its twenty first year:  Maximum membership is one hundred and ten ordinary members and currently we have one hundred and six members and no one on a waiting list.  The average attendance at monthly meetings is seventy four.  The Club is in a good financial position, is in good shape and its future looks good.
