A Tale of Two Nineties

In 1936, two babies entered the world—one in England and the other in Adelaide. Neither could have imagined that their paths would one day cross in Darwin, where they would become much-loved, long-standing members of Palmerston Probus.

Those babies were Ila Heskins, born in February, and Ray Grimshaw, born in July.

Ila arrived during a remarkable chapter in British history. That same year, King George V died, Edward VIII briefly took the throne before abdicating to marry Wallis Simpson, and George VI became King.

Ray’s arrival in South Australia coincided with the State’s Centenary celebrations. Every baby born that year received a Savings Bank of South Australia bank book containing two shillings and sixpence—a small gift marking a memorable milestone.

Across both countries, the song filling the airwaves was Bing Crosby’s Pennies from Heaven.

Ninety years later, these two remarkable people have witnessed enormous change, shared a wealth of life experiences and, through their friendship, kindness and involvement, enriched the lives of so many around them.

The Palmerston Probus Club extends its warmest wishes to Ila and Ray on their 90th birthdays and hopes the years ahead bring good health, happiness and many more cherished memories.
