1932 and the Great Emu War Play

The Wanniassa Probus Club presented a radio play with six “actors” as part of the Probus 50th Anniversary celebrations. It was funded and sponsored by COTA and LDK.

The play was part of the COTA Upstageing Positive Ageing Festival, titled “1932 and the Great Emu War.” It ran for about 40 minutes and was based on four Australian incidents in 1932: DeGroot and the Harbour Bridge opening, Don Bradman and Bodyline, the 1932 Melbourne Cup, and the Great Wall of Western Australia. It was a spoof in nature.

The club used the 50th Anniversary of Probus logo as a backdrop, in conjunction with COTA and LDK logos, along with various scenic props for each of the four segments of the play.

The play went brilliantly, with around 95 people in attendance, leaving only a handful of empty seats. The audience laughed throughout, and feedback after the show was highly complementary, with many also staying afterwards for tea and coffee.

The COTA boss was in attendance and was observed laughing for most of the performance. She suggested to the compere that another play be staged next year, which the club is now seriously considering.
